I need advice for the most optimal way to increase performance in an E4OD, with driving conditions ranging from SW deserts to snowy mountains, with the install of a aftermarked tranny cooler.

The one I purchased was the Hayden stacked-plate (part # 679) with surface area and volume dimentions of 11 x11 5/8 x 3/4. I opted for this one because I need to install it by tomorrow (working near Palm Springs off road), plus it has more surface area for cooling than the B&M 1.5 in deep models.

So my question is this. Many of the FSB forums are nearly split in how folks install these units. This will be only a basic installation (not including filter or temp gauge-it will be added later) of the cooler to the front of the radiator. Should I "add on" the cooler to the stock radiator setup, either install before the stock rad or after? Or, should I keep it as a seperate unit. Keep in mind what I premised this all as. This rig will be used in both extremes of temp-hot and cold. All I care about is that the E4OD is in the best operational tolerances for these extremes.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The tranny shop I work in gets pretty much extreme cold ( -20 to over 100 ) in this area and pretty much the standard way we do them is after the rad and not bypassing the rad as it can only help to cool and in the cold, will warm it as well, the biggest single cause of Trans failure is heat so sounds like a good choice of coolers to me I run 2 in front of the rad in sequence and without the ac core they take about 30 minutes to install my truck had a stock cooler and when it got plugged up took out the original transmission due to overheating actually had smoke coming from the dipstick tube NOT FUN

Thanks wtfdissux,

So you run 2 tranny coolers AFTER the rad cooler, in extreme cold and no probs? Well if it works for those extreme cold conditions, then it can only be excellent and necessary to run it that way in extreme heat conditions.

A few fsb forums mention that possible tranny problems can exist by material originating from the rad cooler connection. I'm assuming if this is true, it is a very low likelyhood of this happening.

Thanks again for the reply.

Mine is rigged by taking the radiator hook up completely out of the loop it is an 1994 e4od with 167k on it so I reckon it is a successful layout.
