According to the Haynes manual it takes 2 to 3 quarts of Mercon dependiong upon the particular transfer case.

One with PTO takes 6 quarts.

Yup, not much to add to that. Come by & look at the Helm manual for it if you want but 2-3 qts is about right. There are two large fill and drain bolts on it. Uper is fill, lower is drain. Do yourself a BIG favor & pickup 3 qts of synthetic ATF and replace what's in there. It'll make a difference for $15 or so. Well worth the investment

ATF?... WOW that's a surprise. I thought that one would use gear oil in there, and that Ford wants Mercon because that is their brand, or whatever... I'm not doubting you, because you know so much about stuff I have such a limited knowledge about. I am just surprised.

Just goes to show how much there is to know, and how much I have to learn.

Thanks for the tip.

Just as an FYI, Mercon is ATF.

Only REAL transfer cases use Gear oil because they use grears to make things move, The Borg Warner units in 1980 and up broncos are gear/chain driven. Gear oil would be too thick.

So in my 79. Same thing? ATF? Or gear oil? Thanks folks. I'm no't sure because of the 1980 & up comment.

I was told gear oil and don't want to be misinformed since I'm putting it in this afternoon. THANKS! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

The 78/79 Bronco has either the NP205 or NP203 gear-driven t-case which takes gear oil, not ATF. JSM84
