i recently purchased a 74 with 302, 3 on the column bronco and would like to replace or upgrade tranny and transfer. not a fan of the column shifting and transfer jumps out of gear and now will not go to 2 high. would really like to get this done pretty quick so i can get started on the suspension and body but do not want to have spend an arm and leg.

i would like to know what trannys mate up pretty simply without having to buy one of these 800 dollar kits from advance adapters.

Nice rig to start with..,

"....and transfer jumps out of gear and now will not go to 2 high"

Could be something simple.., like the indent balls & springs are loose or poss. weak.

Look in the trannie section of your manual

The floor shifters are pretty reasonable in price..this would solve the column problem.., although they (column)are re-buildable as well.

If the trannie is in good shape.., & you can get the transfr. to shift & lock in it ranges...you could get off quite inexpensively. :D/

BUT.., if rock-hopp'n is your bag.., then a conversion may be in order.

"..what trannys mate up pretty simply without having to buy one of these 800 dollar kits "

There is no inexpensive trannie/transf. swap. $2-3-4 K can easily be spent.

Check-- Toms, Wildhorses, JBG, etc. (don't know where you are) they all have trannie conversions.

The cheapest route is a floor shifter.., & attend to the transfer issues & you're good for a long time as they're both good units. >

Enjoy the ride...

thanks alot for the advice. I do believe I will go with droppin the transfer case and going through it although im not to familiar with it. now that I look more into the transmission and transfer swap the less relevant it seems not very cost effective. although i have noticed some serious slapping on the bottom of the tub when accelerating or in a bind maybe a joint wore out, serious axle wrap, or a mount thats let lose on the crossmember. either way ill need to figure it out.

The bad news is..., it's easier to pull the trannie/Transf. together..(heavy)

" i have noticed some serious slapping on the bottom of the tub"

This also could be the the radius arm bushings right under your feet.....

If going with a new floor shifter..., you have to cut a hole in the tunnel...& it may be easy, then, to see the indent bolt heads on the transfer case.

i got underneath it today trying to bump the transfer linkage to get it to slide into 2 wheel i got it in the 2 wheel position on the shifter but the transfer was still in four lo although it was in two wheel position not sure were to go from there. while i was underneath i saw were it was hitting and it was were the yoke output on the transfer case and the drive shaft joint connected it is hitting the tub and wore a pretty good spot but it still hits pretty violently so im not sure if the mounts are wore out or broke but it is kicking up into the tub.

Check also, your front motor mounts.

"... but the transfer was still in four lo although it was in two wheel position not sure were to go from there"

It could be just that simple.., a linkage/shifter issue....

You'll find it...don't give up....
