Rear. Decode the diff tag that is attched to one of the diff cover bolts. Jack up the back end put the truck in neutral (I find t-case in neutral works best) Turn one tire while looking at the other. If it goes the same direction its trac loc, if it goes opposite it is a conventional,

There is no rear end called a posi. That is just what motorheads call the different lockers, whether its a trac loc, detroit locker what ever. They are all posi's. Ford called their posi a trac loc

It is more likely that your truck came with a limited slip differential which was what originally got the slang term posi. Look at the safety compliance sticker on the driver side rear door post for the code under axle. Then post it, it will be somethinglike H9.

Good luck,

:)>-

o cool i guess i have a trak loc then thanks
Thats assuming its stock. Someone could have installed a locker. If you have a Trac loc make sure to follow the gear oil instructions if you ever change the oil. You need an additive.

nah it is stock but a few years ago before my dad gave it to me he and my mom got into a fight one night and he did a crazy burnout through 1st 2nd and 3rd gear and just blew the rear end up into a million pieces, the guy at the shop says he never saw anyone break a rear that bad. lol then it was totaly rebuilt so im not exactly sure what was replaced in it.

The test of turning one wheel and if the other turns backwards doesnt alway show what it has . The ford limited slip really was a piece the S shaped spring that applies tension to the clutch packs is very weak at best and most of the time they slip so bad youd think it was a regular open diff . The trac lock is a dana term they had the track lock which used clutch packs and springs and 2 spider gears , but a better design that the ford unit and a power lock which was the same except it had 4 pinion gears both of these options were in the 44 and the 60 . The S shaped spring ford unit was used in the 1/2 tons and explorers as a 31 spline unit and the mustangs , lincoln mark VII , and Thunder bird turbo coupe as a 28 spline unit the ranger 7.5 rear also had a similar but smaller unit . The detroit is a good unit to actually lock up but all of the clutch units are designed to slip . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I had an 88 with a posi rear and you could tell as it would "hop" a little around corners. Does that sound right? I don't know if "hop" is the right word, but that's kinda what it felt like, a chatter of sorts. My other two didn't have that.
