85 Bronco, 351W(yanked the 6 out), 4bl Edlebrock carb., original TFI ignition, I have yanked all emission controls.......Here is the freakin' problem that is driving me ever so close to suicide!......opened the hood, warmed up motor, pulled out the Chilton and Haynes and read there version on setting timing.....1.I disconnected that little wire spout that is connected to the distributer wiring..... 2. zapped the motor with the light and set the mark to 10degrees BTDC and SHAZAM! it was purring like a kitten.......3.reconnected wire spout and engine advanced to about 5degrees ATDC(correction 30 degees BTDC) and started ticking(sounded like S$#@!)......4.disconnected wire spout again to hear the pur and took it for a spin. NO POWER! VERY SLUGGISH but like always awesome throttle response.....4. connected spout again and gagged at the sound but took it around block anyway. Much better in power, but engine ran hot(the sound and heat were reason I timed in first place).....can someone help me.....Have not touched carb yet......since I have nothing but the distributor hooked to that ridiculous little ECC unit should I just leave spout disconnected and adjust carb? leave spout connected and time it then? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I went to a FORD Dealership and talked to some mechanic that was like 70 years old(was suppose to be expert) and couldnt answer my question.....

GOT MSD ?? :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> You cannot run the EEC that way it is a very inteligent unit if you ever look into what it does and how fats it does it youd be amazed . The reason for disconecting the spout connector is that it takes the advance control away from the computer much like timing a carb with the vacuum advance disconnected from the dizzy . Now your problem is more than likely this when you plug that back in the EEC is looking for the coolant sensor / throttle position sensor / manifold absolute pressure sensor and theres something else but cant think of it at the moment . Anyway if it doesnt have this feedback it cant adjust the timing which it would normally do many times a second so now it has no input and is basically freaking out and sounds like it is advanceing the timing way too far . With the spout connector jumper removed the timing stays at the 10 deg or whatever you set it at the whole time thats why the lack of power with it removed . The only options you have are too 1. put all the needed sensore back on ( still may end up bad ) 2 . remove the TFI dizzy and put in a duraspark unit and wire in the duraspark box ( would be easy to do and cheaper ) Or 3 . buy a MSD dizzy and an MSD 6 ignition box ( be the best bet ) and drive it . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
