Okay, engine is in running like a champ! Timing still needs some attention but not a big deal. Now, when I put the truck in reverse it keeps stalling out on me and when it doesn't it makes a horble noise. Sounds like my frame is on the ground sliding. It will also do it in park if I don't set the brake before letting my foot off the brake. I just did a complete fluid change including draining the converter. I'm stumped and I'm thinking it might be time to hit the junk yard for a "new" tranny. Anyone have any thought on this before I get balls deep in this swap? Any tips of the trade before I start? Anything would be greatly appriciated. Oh, I also substituted a quart of fluid for Lucas "transmission fix" stuff. Sounds like I may in this one though? Words of encuragment don't hurt at this time either. THANKS TO ALL!

Were you having any slippage problems with the transmission before you used the Transmission Fix? That stuff increases the friction between clutches and if they were working fine before, then normal tranny fluid should have been sufficient. If that is the case then it may have made the friction between the reverse clutches too great.

Good luck,

:)>-

It was doing it before I did the change which is what promted me to do it. I was going to wait untill the middle of next month to change the tranny fluid.

how did you drain and refill the torque convertor? will the truck move in D. did you pull the tranny when doing this work? Did you mess with the shift linkage at all? is the fluid low/high or foaming? did you check it warm with the truck running? have you tried this with your Tcase in N.

Pulled the plug on the converter and drained it, truck moves in all gears but doesnt like to so much and HATES reverse and slips like a dog on ice, tranny was in the truck, didn't touch the shift linkage, fluid isn't high/low or foamy or discolored either, truck was hot but off durring the drain but running while putting the last 2/3's fluid in and didn't think of putting the t-case in neutral. I wouldn't be able to go at all right?

I didn't even think about the PSD engine being a big block (kick me in the jimmy). I snaged one from the yard yesterday at the Pick-n-Pull from a 93 for $80! Yeah there's only one zero in there baby! That's the only good thing about this place, cheap ass pick-n-pull!

im going to guess the not moving may be a product of lack of fluid in the convertor. Ive always filled them before installing the tranny and never drained on without pulling a tranny. im not really sure how long it will take to fill it but without enough fluid in there your not transfering any power.

as i said before ive never worked on an e40d before, i deal mostly with manuals but a clutch replacement doesnt seem far off

is the grinding noise congruent with the speed/distance you are going or engine rpm? throw the tcase in N and pop it in gear and see if it makes the same noise.
