ok so i now have a brand new cat installed. no more nasty exhaust in the cab. you would think sweet right? well now i have a new smell it is like a rich fuel smell. not so much in the cab though. but this is what i was wandering.

what is the correct thermostat to run in a bronco? this is what i am thinking. i think that someone may have put a lower temp thermostat in there and it is telling the computer one thing when it should be saying something else. making it run on the rich side.

my questions are does this make sense?

where should my temp read on the gauge?( i always thought half way and mine is only getting to about 1/8th of an inch off the start point)

and what is the correct thermostat?

thanks mike gross

I checked online at autozone, they claim the original temp thermostat is 192 degrees

Does your check engine light come on? If so... pull diagnostic codes from the computer, all you need is a four inch piece of wire and the ability to count to 10.

I would pull codes anyway.

Here is an instructional thread on how to do it.

Did you knock off the connection to your O2 sensor?

Pulling codes only takes ten minutes, I would check for them anyway... they don't always set the CEL.

Mike, according to ford broncojoe is correct...190 deg.stat is the right one...as far as yor gauge it depends on a few variables...one is it working correctly....is the temp.sensor working...or does it have super cooling pkg.or heavyduty cooling pkg...on my 85 w/351w it runs a heavyduty cooling...and my needle only sets between the o and r on the gauge....as far as the factory gauges i don't really relie on them...they make a-pillar tim gauge pods....i used this and two autometer gauges....oil and temp...works great.....just a thought.... thanks all. i will check the codes this weekend to see what i get. as far as the cooling goes i am not for sure if it has the super cool or not on it. i have noticed over the past few days that the hotter the truck gets the more the rich smell goes away. i was also thinking that most of my drive time is on the highway. i am getting alot of air coming in and maybe that is why it doesnt get right up to tempeture. i was sitting in the burgerking drive threw last night and it almost got to the N in normal on the gauge. as far as the gauges go i do think that they are correct, minus the oil gauge not working at all. i still need to do some trouble shooting on that one. as far as adding the aftermarket gauges that is not a bad idea. is there a way to hook up the after market gauges and keep the factory gauges working also? i would hate to disconnect the factory stuff to just using the aftermarket stuff... it bugs me to see something not working even if i know it works... i am weird like that. again thanks to all for the replys!

Regardless of whether you have super cool, or super duper- super stupendous cool your truck will run at 190 degrees if you have a 190 degree thermostat in there.

Traveling at highway speeds will not cool your truck below the thermostat temp, unless you are in very frigid weather.

Check for vacuum leaks, check to be sure that you do not have an exhaust leak before your O2 sensor, check your coolent level and bring your truck up to operating temps before you check for codes. But DO check for codes.

Let us know how you make out.
