I have a 1985 Ford Bronco 351. The tailgate is stuck on it. The window won't come down because the switch on the dash wont work. I cant remove the tailgate if I cant get the window down. Is there any other way to get the window down. Please help.

Take the cover plate on the inside out and find the yellow and red wires (the wires were that color on my 90) running to the window motor. Cut the wires and using a car battery, touch them to a terminal and switch the wires if its backwards. Make sure the wires are going to the window motor or you'll melt some wiring!

Also, are you positive that the switch is bad or do you need to reset the safety switch located at the top driver's side corner near the latch. Its a white button thing, just push it. I bypassed mine, it took some time and I screwed up a little, but it worked.

Have you tried the tail gate key switch? Have you checked fuses 14 and 12., 14 powers the driver switch and has power when the key is in RUN or ACC, fuse12 has power at all times. If both switches fail to work then you have a bit of troubleshooting to do. Essentially what firelt90bronco said is part of the troubleshooting proceedure. I don't know about a 90 Bronco but on a 85 there is no white button, the safety switch is located inside the left latch mechanism. Try pushing on that side of the tail gate while operating the tail gate switch, make sure that the driver switch is in the center position or the tail gate switch will not work. Also do the same thing while someone operate the driver switch.

If neither work a bit of easy probing with a voltmeter is in order and will point you at the problem. More on that if you have to go that far. Diagrams attached.

DO NOT CUT THE WIRES BAD BAD BAD . He is right though the orange and red wires are for the window motor . If you unplug it and look in the end you will see 2 spade type connectors you can now push your jumper wires in there to mke a connection . I use a 18 volt cordless dewalt battery and a set of jumper wires I made up that plug into the battery prongs and then I take the other ends and can push them into the plug to run the window up or down works for door windows too and no the 18v battery isnt too much it doesnt have near the amperage of the car battery so its all good . Any time you cut wires you increase the chances of having alot of problems later . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Oh, come on, its only fun if you cut the wires! Well, you are right about cutting wires, every month it seems like I have to take it apart and reconnect a broken wire because the window went down too far.
