Yes it does look like that. You can remove the decorative panel by removing the nuts that hold the mounting hardware. To get at them, it would be easiest to remove the window and the window regulator mechanism. Once they are out of the way, the nuts holding the mounting hardware can be removed.

Good luck,

Huh, why did mine have hardware to remove for each of the mounting brackets? Each had two pins that enter through the sheet metal and either nuts or spring type clips, 4 of which were behind the regulator. Neither part is difficult to remove and replace, so taking them out of the way makes working inside of the tail gate easier in the long run. After having done that once the job only takes about a 1/2 hour for removal and 1/2 hour to reinstall.

Well maybe my memory is defective. Perhaps I already had it all apart when I took my panel off. I'll have to look at that next spring when I unwrap the old girl. But I still say it is a heck of lot easier when mucking around in there to get the window completely out of the way, it only takes a few minutes. 2 screws and 4 nuts and it's out.

If you remove the weather strip the window slides out with no problem, no need to remove the hardware that is riveted to the glass. You just need to be careful removing the window weather strip which is easily done if you are careful and then take off the end seals. I've done it numerous times with no problem, just requires a gentle pry at each point where it hooks into the metal. There is a danger of bending the weather strip if you are not careful but if the tail gate is old you probably would be better off in the long run to replace them with new ones.
The tail gate lock is easy to approach from the side with the window in and up, but if you have to work in the middle of the tail gate it is in your gut, the risk of breaking the glass is higher especially with it dangling out and unsupported, and with the exception of getting cut by broken glass that you just broke by laying on it, there is no safety issue. Neither did I say I remove the window every time I work in the tail gate. If I were working on a latch, switch or lock which can be easily reached from the side, I would just support the window and do my thing. However, when doing things in the center of the gate, and the window needs to be fully up to do it, it is easier to get it out of the equation. And to remove the spring washers, or whatever they are properly called, you need to get to the center of the gate. Granted you could get on your hands an knees inside the truck to get at the center, but I would rather work from a standing position http://broncozone.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/rolleyes.gif

I'm not saying Steve's way is wrong and Fred's way is right, nor is either the only way. If there is one thing I have learned from being in management for the past 20 years, it is that individuals approach the same job differently and as long as works, there is no wrong way. Like they say, "there is more than one way to skin a cat" http://broncozone.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/smile.gif .

It's been a good discussion of methodologies and Brad050, I hope informative not confusing http://broncozone.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/rolleyes.gif .

I am not arguing with you. If you read the last post you would note that I clarified what I was saying about removing the window when working on the inside of the tail gate. I didn't say you are wrong and I am right, I said that there is more than one way to approach things.
