I believe the '68 has the actual "T" handle with the push button to lock it in ea. position. That is a good unit.
Mine ('66) is the "ball" handle & stops at ea. indent inside the T-case only.
If it ever failed, I would get the "TWIN STICK" shifter, avail. from many of the EB stores. The twin stick allows you to pick-n-choose your gear --- front, rear, or both. (works with either, the T handle or the older style BALL handle)
BTW.., if you do up grade yours, don't throw out your old shifter. I'd pay you to ship ALL the parts to me.., not to use but to study for future reference. :-B
