OK. While we're on the topic of t-case shifters, I need some advice and so other newbies here might also get some info from my question. I continue to have problems with shifting from 2H to anywhere and then shifting back there again. What is the proper shifting protocol??? I can see all the rolling eyes now. But hear me out. When I shift from 2H to the 4W side, how do I hold the handle? Bias it all the way to the right until I get to the bottom of the J? Or all the way to the left? Or do I just let it take it's course and not worry about it? I keep getting hung up and think it's because of the way I'm trying to shift. I'm wanting to keep the shifter pushed to the right or left when I'm moving the stick. When I try letting it come down (or up) naturally, it doesn't seem to help either. Bleah. :glare:

It's been a while since I had a J shift but.., with the shifter in the "comma" position...pulling back a bit & to the left., then all the way up toward the dash, is 4WD low range.

Coming straight back toward that 90deg. angle, you get neutral then 4WD high range.

Then moving the stick back to the right toward the "comma" gives you 2WD high range.

Not 100% sure on the gear positions but that's the "pattern"

You'll eventually develop a feel for it.

Someone with a "J" shift may chime-in if I have the gear locations wrong.

Also., seems to me it worked better with eng. runn'n..., and/or slight clutch bump/slipping.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I have the "improved" (not stock) J-shifter installed. I am fairly familiar with the pattern, it's just that when I use it, it seems to hang up between the 3 options. Seems like I am inducing a mis-alignment in the mechanism somehow and was wondering if my biasing (exerting pressure left or right during the shift) had anything to do with my problem. But you're definitely right, it's lots better with the engine running.

I remembered that.., You're prob. lucky., mine was old/orig. & it was like churn'n butter.. really lose/sloppy.

I did eventually learn where the gears were... :D/
