Hopefully somebody can help me with my dilemma. I recently replaced the stock 302 with a 302 ** from enginefactory.com and am unable to get it to idle.

Here are some of the symptoms I am experiencing:

1) starts cold w/o pressing on the gas and dies about 1 minute later.

2) black smoke coming from exhaust with smell of gas

3) will not idle besides initial startup when cold

Here are things I have replaced or cleaned:

1) cleaned Idle air controller

2) cleaned throttle body

3) New Sensors: tps, oxygen, map, ect, act, egr

4) New fuel regulator and fuel filter

5) new battery cables

Things I've checked for:

1) vacuum leaks (none found)

2) codes (none)

3) fuel pressure (38 psi)

4) spark (present but looks weak)

5) timing is good

6) no fuel leaks around injectors

The engine runs smooth over 1000 RPMs. The only thing left I haven't tried is switching the stock injectors (19 lbs/hr) with the 24 lbs/hr that came with it. It is running way too rich and maybe this would help since I am still using the speed density computer.

The other thing I was wondering if I needed to swap the wiring harness and computer from a 5.8.

Please Help Me!

It is not a mustang 302 **, rather a 302 with a roller cam, roller rockers, mallory tfi distributor.

The engine is not set up as mass air...looking to in the future.

I'm familiar with the website.

I was hoping to find someone that has done something similar to what I am doing since I was assured that the motor would work with speed density and the same computer.

The fuel injectors are being swapped back to the original 19 lbs/hr today. I was also thinking it could be the egr valve stuck wide open but I'm not for sure.

Changed fuel injectors and it seems to run smoother but it still won't idle.

went from 24 lb injectors (exhaust black) to 19 lb injectors and now it has white exhaust.

if i hold it at 1000 RPMs it will surge back and forth a couple hundred RPMs

changed the oil which was full of gas but still no luck on idle.

found this in a mustang forum, i'm out of my league on this one. or at least until she starts spitting codes.

Hey V8ranger 4X4, things sound sort of messed up. Let me try and organize a few things.

A. If you suspect gas getting into the oil, more than likely you will have a leaky injector(s). Fuel getting into the oil will take out the bearings in a hurry so make sure it is fuel and not other issues.

B.130 psi of compression is low if you said you just rebuilt it . The readings should be around depending on the compression ratio 170 to 180. But then you mentioned you installed an E cam in it. Is this on a otherwise stock engine? A cam like this can cause low compression because of its duration especially on stock heads and upper and lower intakes that do not flow very well. To compliment the cam it should have a system to provide more airflow, otherwise not much if any will be gained.

C.Sounds like you have some emmission components missing causing your check engine light to come on. I don't remember what codes 44 and 94 pertain to but it sounds like your always running rich. Check into the codes and see what you come up with. Is the Egr system deleted from your engine?

D. Did it run like this right after you rebuilt the engine or sometime later? Double check your vacuum lines and electrical connections first.

**** Just thought of something, check your fuel pressure regulator. The diaphram may have ruptured causing it to run very rich. Just take the vacuum line off to see if there is any raw fuel coming out of it because there should'nt be any.

Had this happen to our Ford plow truck last month. It was so bad that there was fuel running out of the tailpipe! Hope some of this makes sense and helps you out. Frank
