I have this problem on my '88 Bronco 5.0 V8, stop light fuse blows when brakes applied long, when I take care and just tap the brakes and dont keep the brake pedal pressed long it doesn't blow the fuse, but if I forget and keep the brakes on a red light it will blow it quick, it started after changing the steering column from a donor bronc by a supposed mechanic. maybe he messed some circuits, I don't know, I'll try to find out ASAP. do you think the problem lies in the steering column, or in the brake switch on the pedal or maybe a short somewhere else? I also want to swap a non adjustable column in the near future. Does anybody know what years can interchange even from F trucks.

any help greatly appreciated.

thanks very much.

What year truck do you have. Add your truck vitals to your signature, it will make it easier to answer any questions you may have :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> .

87-91 model years are pretty much the same, Bronco and F-150. Since the fuse is blowing, that circuit is drawing more amps that what it's rated for. The first thing I would check would be to make sure the fuse has the appropriate rating, 10 or 15 amps, rather than a 5a unit. Simple thing, but probably not the issue. Sounds more like a wire got pinched during the install of the column. I'd start with taking the covers off the column and un-bolting it from the dash, lay it down, then try the brakes. Basically undo each step of the install, one by one, testing the lights at each step, until your find the problem. Look for melted or broken insulation. These kinds of issues can be real easy, or real tough, there's hardly any middle ground, unfortunately.
