how can i tell if my 83 bronco 4wd has stock suspension? i just bought an 86 f150 2wd for parts, and the rear ends do not look the same. i was not expecting this -- i thought they would look the same. i know the front won't look the same, but shouldn't the rear ends look the same?

There are two spring packages available for the stock Bronco, and at least a couple for the 2WD F-150. For the Bronco, up front the standard pkg has a single shock, and the rear leaf pack has four leafs. The towing option has quad shocks, or two per side, up front, and five leafs for the rear pack. The front coil springs are the same for both options, and measure about 12" tall when installed under the Bronco. JSM84

looks like someone added a helper setup which is odd because you wouldnt be hauling a heavy load.

here is what the stock rear end(8.8) looks like in my 85.

No you have an add-on helper spring set-up. The main leaf pack on the bottom has four leafs, the other 3, separate ones on top are the add-on. The add-on doesn't necessarily increase your ride height, more for carrying heavy loads and keeping the rear springs from sagging. This also makes the ride very stiff as compared to stock. As I mentioned, measure the height of the front coil springs, then report back. 12" is stock, JSM84
