steering issues

I'll be driving down the road at highway speeds (level and straight) and the steering wheel will suddenly jump a few degrees, it has also been doing it when i am pulling into and out of parking spaces. It almost feels like its jumping a tooth in the steering box, but it only does it every once and awhile, seems almost at random. I drove around the parking lot to see if i could recreate it but i can't. Are there any points i could tighten up or diagnose it further without having to take it to a shop?
