My steering wheel has about 6 inches of play. I can turn the wheel 6 inches to either side without the wheels moving at all. I have tried the worm gear, replaced the steering box THEN the worm gear, and am taking it in for 4 wheel alignment. If that doesn't solve it, I'm out of ideas. It's to the point where I am constantly compensating for any and all road defects, no matter how minor or major. Also, the shaft seems to be fully intact, and the rag gear also seems in working order. Anyone have any ideas on what else I can do to solve this?

u probably have checked this becaue u would before an alignment but the ball joint on the drag link and the steering box. mine was loose some time ago and that made for some interesting driving. also i would check the drop down brackets for the front axle mine was loose and was causing some serious steering wander
