Spare tire Carrier

96 xlt...truck’s got factory holes for the external tire carrier, some are filled in with plastic caps. The three holes on the top of the right side of the tailgate are exposed and seem to have broken off plastic in them. IM looking at picking up the tire carrier for my 31 in. spare, if I’m getting it from someone who just took it off their 96 bronco, what do i need to make sure i have ? What could this cost me to get installed? am I risking the functionality of my rear window?

No, our 96 external tire carrier doesn't interfere with the window, however Ensure you have all the "screws" from the seller. You don't want screws that are too long.
It is a DIY job.

No, our 96 external tire carrier doesn't interfere with the window, however Ensure you have all the "screws" from the seller. You don't want screws that are too long.
It is a DIY job.

alright thanks for the info. this is the only part I’m not sure about is in this pic. where the latch or receiver is supposed to be on the tailgate itself, it looks like sheared off plastic or something?

alright thanks for the info. this is the only part I’m not sure about is in this pic. where the latch or receiver is supposed to be on the tailgate itself, it looks like sheared off plastic or something?
I’m just wondering if I should go the trailer hitch route for mounting my spare or get the traditional tire swing carrier since I found one nearby. not sure how difficult putting it on is but since I got the factory holes I figured it would be doable? latch receiver is only question

I put a 33 BFG mudterrain on my 1993 rear spare tire carrier. I did not like the way it rode and I was always a little concerned it would fail. I wish I would have know there is a market for them .. or I wouldn't have put it in a dumpster. My 1996 has a internal spare tire carrier that I like more. When I replace the carrier on the 1993 it will be mounted on the bumper with a swing out arm.

I would not drop a ton on the factory mount... and if you are already looking at a beefy rear bumper … now might be time to upgrade from stock.

In the parts diagram, I believe it is for #2 , 1469 Carrier support (aka latch).
I have not seen any plastic parts except for original latch sleeve; see my post in

so many choices...
* Repair/replace (make sure the metal backing plate is still inside the tail lght bucket'n tailgait. I believe if there, bolts are mig-ed on it too, Scrape off/drill out the "Plastic" (probably body putty). The oe swingers (complete - lots of prts in them) are sold all over.
* Geta heavy 'aftr mrkt' carrier. They are HEAVY, semi-custom made, in the 4-1,000$ range.
Both these choices (I think this is ur orig Q) can obscure the back window when the tire is mounted (31 inch tire is not that big unless a 20 inch tire/wheel or very hi aspect ratio). Weight is a real issue - spring, shock wear; MPGs, etc). They sure R handy tho.
* Some mount inside: on tail gait, L or R side of bed or way up frnt just back of seats. The last is what I prefer...(but have a 'mainy" 1/2 cab EB).

thanks for these suggestions. As I look closer at it i’m tempted to just throw on a fold down tire mount out of my hitch

That doesn't look right.

Inside the tailgate there should be a steel plate. Looks like the bottom hole you can still see it, I don't see it in the top holes so maybe it slide in there? Moved.

need to open up the tailgate for sure. With all the rusted out tailgates out there the pieces you need should be cheap and available.

I would recommend using stainless steel screws. In Michigan about 50% of the head snap off from corrosion. Make sure that it’s not an aftermarket tailgate that’s missing the bracket that provide support for the tailgate mounted striker. I made a video on the Broncos and Parts Garage YouTube channel regarding taking an empty Tailgate Shell and building it into a complete shell. You may want to take a look look

not sure what that is but the 3 hole- hi, 3 hole- low is for the hinge pin receiver. There's 2 ta match on the tire carrier (oem). In side the gait isa coupla backing plates, reinforcing the gate sheet metal to hold rack'n tire (well, a 33X10.5X15/16, nuttin monster). So "No" it duz not interfere w/the window or latch mechanisms.
o0OP. now I C I've been here B4. (scannn "Similar Threads"). Enuff entries, (on my prt) guy not here since spring...

Help! I ordered 4 of the hinge bushings from McMaster’s and pressed them in. When we tried to put the pins through the hinges, they got stuck halfway through. Now we can’t get the pins to either go the rest of the way or back out. If we can get them out, what can we use instead of the brass bushings?

I was finally able to remove the two pins on Friday. I wallowed out the bronze bushings with a Dremel. It worked great! Thanks for the help.

On a slightly related note, has anyone ever installed the extra two lug nuts in the spare tire on the swing gate? It only takes the three to mount it, but then there are two open holes. Thanks.
