i was wandering if anyone had succesfully removed smog pump and crossover pipes from back of heads w/o having cel and running problems. my state doesnt have smog tests so im not worried about that but i dont want to cause driveability problems. one of my tubes going to the cat convertor is cracked and leaking and if i was gonna have to pull the exhaust i would rather bypass all of this crap if possible.

My smog pump was the first thing to go, then about 60 feet of useless vacuum tubes associated with that stupid thing. I plugged off the pipe in the back where it comes together and up bu this week, while the upper engine is off, we are removing the pipe and plugging the holes. I have found nothing in the way of problems since all of that stuff came off or has been rendered useless.

Now mine is a 1984, not sure about yours.

It depends on which truck you are doing it to. On the 78 you will get away with it with no ill effect to the engine. On the 95, the truck will hate you since the EEC depends on that stuff to make the engine run properly. If you disable the EGR, you run the risk of ruining the pistons as they control the combustion temp with that function. The O2 sensor and other functions combine to adjust the air fuel mixture, and without the input it will usually run too rich, on the other hand if it runs too lean you will most likely burn a hole in the pistons. The whole system is designed to allow more aggressive control of the engine. I suggest you read up on the subject before you start yanking stuff out.

Ryan over at FSB has one of the best write ups on EEC and the surrounding controls I know of http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/

Good luck,

My comments still stand.

I'm not sure what you expect to gain by eliminating that stuff, they make performance chips for the engine and they also make cheaters to send a constant signal that fools the computer into thinking the fuel/air mixture is perfect. The engine won't blow up on you but it won't adjust the fuel/air mixture to allow for various conditions.

Do some reading and find out the ramifications of eliminating the function and then make up your mind. After all It's Your Truck.

Good luck,

:)>-

On my 86' (v-belts, 302 EFI) I just pulled off the belt that drove the smog pump. A bit more omph, and a 2-3 mpg increase was the only side effects I got

Your 86 engine isn't the same as a 95, nor is the control of it by the EEC.

Well, true, it's a Speed Density 302 vs. a Mass Air 351. But there is an EEC in there. I was just pointing out a possible alternative to removing all the plumbing and stuff would be to slip the belt off the smog pump. I know that's a little trickier with a serpentine belt system, but it might be worth it.
