Since I have a leak and a noisey pump on my 88 I was thinking about the saginaw pump swap but I have a serpentine belt so can I do the swap or need to go to a V belt system.

You should be able to find a serpentine belt arrangement at your local friendly auto parts recycler. You need to get the bracket, pump and high pressure line from a E series van with the same engine you have. Without the 4x4 though I don't think you would need it. It will make steering very sensitive. I can turn my front wheels with one finger on dry ground at a stand still and it took a little getting use to the feel when driving at first.

Good luck,
