My 1982 Bronco has a 6 cylinder and 4 speed with granny gear, and 3.55 rear axle ratio. It runs good but its really screaming @ 55 mph. I'd like to get 65-70 out of it without it scraming, should i just put bigger tires on it or look for another transmission? If it had a 5 speed I think it wouls run a lot better.

A 5 speed would definatly help out by lowering your rpm's. Another thing you can do is put larger tires on it. 33's will fit and lower your rpm's as well. Or spend some cash and put in higher gears in the diffs. I personally would go for the 33's

yea they did but it was weak as ****, the 3 speed with granny gear ( 4 including granny) should be a 1:1 fouth gear, about the same as the E4OD when you put it in drive (hit the overdrive button to keep it from going into OD). I didnt notice my truck running realy high rpms till 80mph like that, with 3.55 gears. one thing you might want to consider is this http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_an...eroverdrive.htm the damn things are expensive as **** though.

I had a 81 with the same engine and tranny combo, with 33's I would run 65 mph ish at around 2400 80 mph was closer to 3000, thats not screamin, being as its the same gearing setup as the 3 speed automatic just manual of course with the low first. so unless you have some issues( maybe clutch ) between 2200 and 2500 rpm is normal

might have some clutch slippage issues, or maybe he actually has lower gears than what the door tag says. I've got a chart around somewhere that you can use to determine your gear ratio.

I swapped in a '95 5-speed from an F150 into my '83 Bronc, and it wasnt very fun. I used the pedal assembly from the '95, and I had to weld some brackets to it so it would properly bolt into the '83, and support the steering column. Cut a hole in the firewall for the '95 hydraulic master, and it worked out like stock. With the rebuilt '95 300(converted to carb) I also installed, 3.55 gears, and 31" tires, the old Bronc is barely revving at 55 mph, and has been averaging 22-23 mpg since the motor broke in.

I wish reverse was a little lower,(eh, a lot lower, actually) since I really have no need to back up at 40 mph, but otherwise, it's a good setup.

ouch, didn't have to go to that much work dude, late 83 they switched to a hydraulic clutch with an external ****** you could hook that up to the concentric ***** on the 95 trans, but you'de likly need to have a dealer pull a bunch of different clutch lines to find one that works for the job, or actually, you could proabably use the 83 1/2 -86 pedal setup, and the 95 master cylinder, and then the 95 concentric *****.

Ah, it was a budget job, and I was flat broke at the time. I used what I had from the parts truck, and it was cheap! haha
