You will probaboy hate yourself if you try to do that with the engine in. Expect that if you are going to do that it's about time to do a complete rebuild.

Good luck,

:)>-

Naa, take off the oil pan, intake manifold, heads and headers and its a no brainer from there. You will have to scuff up the cylinder walls with those berry looking things so the new rings will seat properly. You can rent them for $5 at most rental stores. You will need to replace the rod bearings too. Make sure youi get the torc specs on the rod bearings. Its only like 14 lb. or so.

It is possible to leave the motor in, but you will have to raise it enough to remove the oil pan. You can get by with just honing the cylinders, but be sure there is not much of a groove at the top, or it will break the new rings. I did a similar "mild" rebuild on a Chevy 350 in a 78 3/4-ton 4x4 years ago. Found a "shim" under the rear main crankshaft bearing made out of a Coor's can!!!

I used to work at a car lot and have done it both ways, trust me you are better off pulling the motor and doing it right. Remember that the engine is only as strong as its weakest part! If you cut corners it will bite you on the $%@ at the worst time possible. Not to mention it is a hole lot easier to trim the ridge and hone the cylinders. if you don't don't trim it striaght like he said you can break a ring or egg shape the cylinder.
