I'm taking apart the 4 wheel locking hubs on the front of an 81 Bronco. I was able to remove the cap and the retaining ring, but wasn't able to disassemble it any further. My chiltons told me to remove a "retaining *****" or something like that, but there's no ***** to remove or anything that seems to be holding things in place. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove what's neccessary to access the wheel bearings and to remove the rotors? (2 separate jobs)

Thanks for any help.

There are two retainer rings, one on the axle shaft and one that is not too obvious at first glance (it sets in a grove inside the hub). The first one takes an expander tool to remove and replace it, the other one just needs a pick to get it out. Then you need a special socket for the spindle nuts, (you can get one at most parts stores).

You need to replace the hub seal since you have to pull the old seal to get at the inner bearing. Use something that fits around the entire diameter of the new seal when tapping it into place, I use a 3/4 drive socket that is just the same size as the seal. Be sure to torque the spindle nuts properly and make sure the lock nut is on correctly. Torque the inner spindle nut to 50 ft. lb. while wiggling the wheel to make sure the bearing is set, then back it off just a bit to allow a hole in the lock nut to fit over the little *** on the spindle nut. Then install the outer spindle nut and torque it to 150 ft. lb.

Good luck,

:)>-
