just installed a new painless harness. the only prob i have is that the regulator gets HOT and burns up. this happens when the ignition is turned to start and the engine isn't even running. within 5 minutes the regulator is HOT. i have traced the wires over and over and i can't find anything wrong. any ideas why this is happening????

Electronics is not my forte, but I would call Painless. They are good to deal with and will help trouble shoot.

I have to agree. It shouldn't be happening. Now I'll admit up front to only having used the Painless kit once (as most folks know I'm a Ron Francis fan) but the kit I DID use gave me no problems (I just wasn't big on it for reasons of my own but it's a damn fine kit, don't get me wrong). If you followed the instructions then it shouldn't be doing this, simple as that. Give them a call and they'll walk you thru it, or at least they *should*. If they don't I'm sure plenty the guys here will want to know about that. Pls keep everyone informed, let us know how you make out. And if push comes to shove don't be shy about letting Painless know you're a member of the forum and posting about your experiences. Sometimes a few dozen sales per year matter to someone. It's a good kit, but NOT when they don't/won't support it.

My 1st. question would be..;

What precipatated the re-wire...? Was there already a problem..?

Alternator & reg. don't come with the kit. A bad alt. can "smoke" a regulator.

And, I think, visa-versa......

AZ will test for free...alt. & reg.

Just a thought...... B)

Painless has been helpful so far and are working with me to help resolve this problem. I'll let you know what comes up. Ground-up restoration therefore new wiring. Thanks for the additional advise.
