I think I found a guy who can rebuild my motor. My neighbors friend, retired guy does this for side money/hobby. Apparently does a lot of work!!

My question is though.. how much power should I allow my 302 to pump out? At what point does the balance of fuel/power come into consideration?

My aim is for good MPG but some decent power. I was thinking somewhere near 300hp but I would like to maintain my MPG around 16-18.. ideas?

First, be more concerned with low end Torque

than high rpm HP..

you're not trying to move a 2500 lb 'Stang

screaming at 6500 rpm, you need to shove a

heavy brick.. so keep the cam sensible, put

your $$ into quality parts, try to find a set

of used iron GT-40 heads to let it breathe, don't

raise the compression so high that you need to

run pump 93.. I'll assume that this is your

daily driver and that would defeat your statement

that you need decent mpg's on the street..

We need a lot more detail about your rig, tire size,

gearing etc to give you a short answer..

go to www.sbftech.com and spend some time reading

BEFORE asking questions.. that way you'll learn

which questions to ask and not look like a noob..

good luck

Cool I'll check out that link and read up.

Yes, my daily driver/camping rig so I don't want/need anything special. I'm just looking for enough power to do the job. My truck has to kick down a gear just to get up a slight incline hill on the highway

Running 31's, but may bump up to 33's. I plan on redoing the exhaust system and plan on new headers. May tweek the intake system to get the most airflow possible. New radiator and tranny cooler slapped on.

In the time the motor is out of the truck, I'll also rebuild the tranny, but more importantly I'm going to bedliner black the whole engine bay.

Now I need to go plant a few money trees in the backyard $-)

Good advice, I would shoot for between 250-300 HP. Compared to a stroker 302 with 400 HP and a bunch of mods, you may find better value in a shift kit for the tranny while keeping the engine mods in check. Swapping heads, adding a mild RV cam, and headers should get you around 300Hp. But you will need to factor in how the ECU or computer in your 89 can handle those changes. I think it will not eith those mods. You may instead just consider a mild cam swap only, one that is compatible with your ECU. Comp Cams is the first place to look. IF you want to maintain decent mileage around 13-15 mpg, don't get too radical in your changes to the stock system. You ca nimprove intake airflow with a K&N filter, or a "ghetto K&N fipk" setup. Shorty headers will be easier to bolt up to the factory exhaust vs long tube ones, JSM84
