I've done a few of them. I would search the net for info first and see what you can come up with. I am not sure I have a link at home or not. I have an old mustang magazine I use for my torque specs.

The biggest thing will be setting the preload on the pinion bearings correctly and then setting the pinion depth. You can also install a solid sleeve instead of a crush sleeve. this will provide a much stronger set up and it will live longer as well. Set your back lash with a dial indicator and your good to go. Just check wear pattern, it will tell you everything you need to know. The pinion depth will affect the wear pattern.

I just found a link that will help you. I didn't think I had this saved at work but I did. http://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/9inch/index.php

good luck

Have you looking inside or drained the gear oil out yet? Could be that the pinion bearing is dry or bad and the gears are OK.

well i just finished taking the rear axle apart and i found the problem... two teeth on the ring gear broken off. i found them swimming at the bottom of the housing. so now i have to decide if i want to buy a new center section or if i want to rebuild this one. i think ill probally go with a whole new center section since ive already found a couple around here for 150 or less (used). anybody have any opinions on this let me know thanks

I have a used 3.50 ring and pinion gear set I will sell for $35 plus shipping. It's just the ring & pinion gear, not a complete third member.

I'd buy the used third member, can have it back up and runnin in a few hours.Be sure to clean the axle tubes out,you don't want any fine metal to make its way back into the new diff.
