Hey all..I have recieved a lot of help and info from this site, so, I am hoping you all can help me again....I have a 1979 Bronco Custom, 2nd owner. The tailgate window works when ever it feels like it, and currently is in the down position and decided not to work.. I have changed the motor and tested it, works fine. What I am confused about and just saw it today, or, I should say, it clicked in my head today, behind the driver side tail light, where the wiring comes out of the tail gate. I read that three (3) wires are suppose to be coming out of it..is it a hot up, hot down and a ground? I have two wires. It is also an after market connection. Is the connection which is suppose to be the one which looks like a plug you would plug a light into or something of the sort? Also I read that an aftermarket trailer hitch is sometimes the cause to the problem, and after reviewing the hitch setu, I have a plug (theres three) under the truck and only two hooked up......

Here are the pictures....

Any and all help is welcomed....

Thanks a Ton....

Btw, if I where to buy this connector, what is the name for it....and please dont say connector....Thanks again

Just to make sure. Is the switch working correctly? I'm not sure what the wires are for, never pulled out the taillight to check, but also make sure the tailgate is completely closed, because I know that will prevent the window from going up.

yeah, the tail gate is closed.... the switch went out years ago and a "new" toggle switch was put in under the dash, it works once in a while, sometimes it wont....I know it is not the "new" switch...and, the tailgate isnt torn apart, this is the wiring behind the driver side tail light where it comes from the tailgate.....

thanks

Hi You can get a new switch and wireing harness from bronco Graveyard. 25$ for the dash switch 250$ for the wireing harness. The harness has the plug on it. If you get it make sure it is for a 78/79 Bronco. I did a 79 tailgate 2 years ago still having some problems. Mostly the tailgate [ bonces] open so he leans on it on the left side and the the key will work. Driving down the road also makes it not work. Get a good book/service manual. Search this forum someone posted a wireing diagram. The 79 I did got a new tailgate, new window motor, new weather stripping. I added another ground and cleaned the grounds for good contact. Good Luck

i had similar problems on my window. i found the switch that closes when the tailgate closes and unplugged it and jumped across the wires it works fine but you can roll the window up with the tailgate dropped not that you would want to.

I would try to hot wire the tail gate closed switch to eliminate it from the equation and if that does not work there could be a wire shorting out somewhere. It could be a good idea to trace wires just to make shure. also clean and check connections it could be possible you may just have a bad connection. thats what i had on my tail gate.

The three wires that go to the front do the following

Black with white stripe = hot to tail gate switch (hot at all times)

The other two go to the driver switch:

when the driver switch is in the center position, they both go to ground

when the driver switch operates, one is hot and the other is ground depending on which way the motor is driving the glass,

(UP or DOWN)

Note that there are also two fuses, one that supplies voltage from the driver switch, (hot in start and run), and the other is

to the tail gate switch, (hot at all times).

diagram attached.

Good luck,
