hi all, i'm new here. i just bought an 1986 ford bronco xlt with the 6 cyl. truck runs great, the only problem i have is that the rear window doesnt do any thing, if i run some wires to it and connect them then it moves. if i use the rear key nothing, if i use the switch on the dash board nothing. i'm getting 12 volts to the switch when the key is turned on but nothing there back. can i jump the wires at the connect near the dash swithc in order to get the window to move? help, rain is on the way  /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Chances are you have a broken wire between the body and the window motor in the tail gate.

If you do a search on this forum you will find a wealth of information related to this problem as it has been covered numerous times.

The ground for the motor goes all the way back through the driver switch. You most likely have a break in that line, it is a common problem and you will usually find that on one of the connectors the line has corroded until the line breaks. However, the break can be in almost any point. Like already mentioned the place where it flexes between the tail gate and the quarter panel, at the connector behind the driver side tail light, or the connector on the left side of the rear cross member. Attached is a wiring diagram for it.

Good luck,

:)>-

PS

In looking at the diagram, I forgot to mention one of the more common faults. That switch you see near the motor is in the tailgate left side latch. You can try bypassing it, it often is the cause of the failure and really isn't necessary. It's function is to prevent you from moving the glass while the gate is down, (something you really want to d when servicing the window hardware). They think you are too dumb to remember to retract the window all the way before closing the gate.

I would check the safety switch first, then the wires-connection under the rear crossmember. I've had 3 broncos (1981, 1986, 1987) that all had bad connections there due to corrosion. I still have the 86 and I simply spliced out the connector there and havent had a problem since.

ditto on that. I have the ground return line spliced on mine.

Just an added piece of advice for everyone... I have all new pieces in my tailgate window and this past weekend I closed my tailgate and tried to roll up the window to no avail. I figured it was a switch or something but also wanted to check out the safety switch on the latch. When I opened the tailgate and started inspecting the latch, i noticed that the striker bolt on the body had the plastic collar broken. I found a piece of it and placed it on the striker and taped it in place and voila, it worked. So if you ever start to have issues with your rear window, check the striker bolt and make sure it has the plastic collar on it otherwise the switch will not activate.. (By the way, I did replace the striker so it is not taped in place anymore.)

I have 2 Broncos (89 and a 90). Both had broken wires in the loom where it goes from the tailgate to the body. Also, both had bad dash switches (broncograveyard.com). You can test whether the switch is bad by disconnecting the dash switch from the socket, then jumpering a couple wires. Top left blue to one of the middle purples, and the bottom black ground to the other middle purple. Then turn on the key. Reverse the purples ONLY to cycle the window the opposite direction.

On either vehicle, the tailgate key won't cycle the tailgate window up or down. Haven't figured that one out yet.

We actually used jumper cables (not recommended) from a donor vehicle to cycle the window up and down with the wires under the tailgate cover.
