I have a 89 Bronco w/302 and it leaks oil from the rear main seal. What is the easiest way to replace the $15.00 seal without pulling the engine?

unbolt the bell housing and drop the oil pan in place and then repace the seals. drain the oil first. while you have the pan off, replace the gasket and front seal also. this is also a good time to inspect you crankshaft bearings and see the overall health of the engine.

If (as I suspect) the 89 has a one piece seal, you are stuck with either pulling the motor, or the easier way, dropping the trans and t/case.

Before going that far though, clean the motor very well, especially at the back of the valve covers, and the top and back of the intake.

302's are notorious for blowing the seals out at the front and rear of the intake.

This leak can appear to be coming from the rear main. Valve cover leaks can look like a bad rear main as well, especially if the leak is at the rear, the oil will blow back on the motor, and run down the block.

good luck.

The Bronco V8's after 1983 have a one-piece rear main seal, so you will need to drop the tranny to replace this. Like stated, though, be 100% sure it's not the oil pan gasket or a leak from higher up. Look for oil inside the bellhousing cover plate and on the starter gears.
