Ok I must be a complete idiot! (1989 Full size Bronco - 351W)
I dissembled the rear differential to replace fluid, clean and check cutch plates and replace outer wheel bearingsand seals. Disassemble seemed faitly stright forward. Upon reassembly I could NOT get the flippen z-spring (trac-loc spring) installed. The origional snapped in 1/2. Was able to find a replacement new one localy and after 2+ hours of prying and hammering finally broke this one.
I tried installing it several ways: Before the spidergears - could not get the last spider gear in. Tried when all gears in place but with one axel removed slightly but it looks like the spring is just too big. Not only in height but in width also. (by like 1/4" on each side!) not to mention the height 'may' not compress enough to allow it in w/o bending or breaking. Even if I could get it in I question the ability to get the spider gear shaft through the spring as it will be to compressed.
I tried the install with the Diff and axel on/in the truck.
The guy I spoke to at the Differential store (huge West Cost Differential repar and parts complex in Sacramento CA - specializing in all differentials, transfer cases, racing, drag 4-wheel, you name it.) and he sais the spiders need to be in, then with a hammer 'tap' the spring into place. RIGHT!
He also said I may not need it if I didn't care about the Loc-Trac funntion?? Not sure what he ment by that.
2 Questions:
1) What is it used for and do I really need it?
I currently reassembled w/o the spring and the wheels seem to turn and spin as they should. Have not re-oiled and done a road test - yet.
2) If it is critical, then how in the flippen world do you get it in there? I have to be missing something!
Thanks for your assistence...AB
