I just bought an 83 bronco, 351w auto. Paid 500 for it. The problem is this...When I stop at a light, or for any other reason, and accelerate too quickly, the truck dies. I am looking for some ideas on what it might be. My thoughts go to the carb. I haven't had a chance to go through it because it is too darn cold outside at this point. If anybody can give me some help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Definitely a carb problem. If it is an old carb, you might want to consider trying a rebuild kit. It could be either flooding or starving.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. It was a good deal, and hard to pass up, but it sure is going to be a project. I am sure that I will be posting on here fairly regularly once I get to it.

I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but hadn't mentioned it before. If I let the bronc ease into it on it's own, and apply the gas slowly, it seems to do alright. Just when I accelerate too quickly is there a problem.

jt, the first thing I'd do is pull the fuel filter, and change it if it's not fairly new or it looks dirty.

Turn the engine off, and pull the air cleaner. Look down the throat, and rotate the accellerator lever. You should see a nice little stream of fuel get squirted into the carb throat, if not, you need to rebuild it, the accellerator pump as mentioned above is shot.

That sure sounds like the acceleration pump and if that is an original 83 carb, it is time to rebuild it anyway. If is is original it would not be unusual for the diaphragm on the accelerator pump to be bad. Joe's suggestion is a good way to verify it.

Good luck,

:)>-

Alright, I will be taking a look at it this weekend hopefully. Although I think it is supposed to get down below freezing again, and at present time, I have no place to get into it out of the elements. Oh man do I miss the random warm days in CO.

Any suggestions on a good place to get my car replaced. I live up in CT. I had seen a place advertised in Jersey I think. Any thoughts?

Sorry, I meant "carb" not "car", and "rebuilt" not "replaced". Wow, where was I that day?

Also looking for a good metal working place. I have that typical rust on the rear wheel wells, and minor stuff a few other places. I'm not planning on doing anything too drastic right away, but I was thinking about having the wells cut short to keep it from getting any worse for now.

i'm not much of a carb dr. but i've had good luck with holleys right out of the box. some of these other guys will have better advice. did you check out the other link for carb settings, you may just need to adjust your accelerator pump. i'd verify your carb is adjusted correctly before i paid for anything.

Yeah, I've got to get it in for emissions pretty quick anyway. I'm gonna have them quickly check a few things. I am hoping/planning on doing most things myself, but I figure I might as well have them take a look. If for no other reason, I can find out if they are a trustworthy group of guys, or if they will try to sucker me into things.

Yeah it is for sure an accelerator pump issue, I had a 390 with a douple pumper and the accelerator pump was starting to go, a couple wacks with a hammer got it running a little bit better for a short while, but its just a diaphragm that is getting wore out, go to a napa parts store and get one for like $10, if there is nothing else wrong with the carb there is no point doing a complete rebuild. just leave the wheel wells and repair it in the spring, save yourself alot of messing around in the cold, its not like the fender wells are going to rust away in a couple of months.

Good luck

Appreciate the help. I wasn't in any big hurry to get the wells done, just trying to start thinking about it. With the economy, all this stuff takes more planning than it used to.

A faulty accellerator pump will not affect your emissions, (at least I don't know how it would).

The guy I bought the bronco from had done a few things under the hood that look like they may mess with the emissions test, but I don't know enough about the emissions test here to know for sure. When he did most of the stuff, CT wasn't making people get emissions done, so I guess we will see.
