I recently aquired an 88 full size, 302, auto. and noticed it has the push button 4x4. I know that the switch controls a motor on the transfer case, but have never owned one of these. All of my previous trucks had the stick shift transfer case. should i be worried?

89 with 302, push button 4x4 with auto hubs.

I switched the auto hubs out with manuals.. SOO much better.

Truck is 20yrs old.. never had a single issue with the push button 4x4. Not to say you won't have a problem next week, or 10yrs from now..

Like anything else electronic.. things can break. Stick shifts are by far more reliable, but buttons can be too :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

sdhaze, I own an 89' 302 bronco with the push button 4x4/w autolock hubs. If yours works its a good thing, ask around and find out how (or use search) to care for the auto-hubs. Your button on the dash goes through a unit called the Electronic Shift Control Module (located under the passenger side kick panel, its a black box), then through to your shift control on the transfer case. I found this all out here while asking and searching, because I have the same type system you have, however, i'm in the middle of troubleshooting mine.

Hope this has helped.

i have an 89 with push button, but i swaped auto hubs to manual as soon as i got the bronco, bad experience with exploder hubs, i know there made of plastic or teflon, or something other than steel lol i just like to know that they are locked, as far as problems with the t-case i havent had any issues, ive heard of the oil pickup tube going bad and causing wierd things like it shifting into low range, but thats just what ive read.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Luckly this thing came with manual hubs, just trying to find out more about what i'm dealing with since most of the fords and chevys i've had were pre '80's. Now just need to find a good used engine to put in it. Thanx again.
