I pulled a smooth one today. My Bronco is mostly just a toy, but I drive it to work a couple times a week just because it's so much fun to drive. On my way home today, the hose popped off of the bottom of the radiator. I didn't notice until it started running funny. I looked down and noticed the temp guage had pegged out. I pulled over immediately, but I guess I was too late. I let her cool off and put the hose back on and filled her up with water. There was no water in the oil, which made me feel better. She starts up, but runs really rough. There is no knocking. It sounds almost like the timing is off or a cylinder or two aren't firing. I was able to drive it home, but it kept spitting and sputtering. It also doesn't have much power. I haven't had time to tear into it yet to see if I can find anything. Anyone been here before?

Ouch!! Been there, done that...

You might have warped a head just enough to lose compression, but not get water in oil. If you are real lucky it could just be gasket failure. In any event, sounds like the heads are gonna probably have to come off; get 'em re-done, re-install w/new gaskets and cross your fingers that it runs OK after that.

I changed the plugs yesterday hoping I might have gotten lucky and just fouled a plug. No luck. I guess I'll tear into it next week and check the head and gasket. This is the 4.9 liter straight 6 engine with a 5 speed manual tranny. Just curious... if I were to change to a 351, would it hook up to the 5 speed or would I have to go with a C6? I really like the manual tranny.
