Hey on my '95 the passeger window motor skips and needs help getting the window up. Obviously the gear on the motor is stripped. Should I just get a replacement motor or try to find the gear, and who sells them? Napa maybe.

Next question is how do I get the motor out. I read somewhere about using a 1/2" drill to drill out the dimples to get to the bolts holding the motor? What dimples are we talking about? I assume the rivets are not what people are talking about? Thanks in advance.

My suggestion is to remove it first to ensure which gears are stripped. If its the motor gears, I imagine you can only buy the motor complete. If its the window gears then junk yard or dealer.

  1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield.
  2. Disconnect power window motor wire from wire harness connector.
  3. Check inside the door to make sure electrical wires are not in line with holes to be drilled in the door inner panel. Using a 12.7mm (1/2-inch) diameter drill bit, drill two holes in the door inner panel at the drill dimples located opposite the two unexposed motor drive retainer screws.
  4. Remove the three motor mount retainer screws using two drilled holes and existing larger hole access to ***** heads.
  5. Push the motor toward the outside sheet metal to disengage the motor and drive from the regulator gear. After the motor and drive are disengaged, prop the window in full UP position.
  6. Remove the motor and drive from inside the door.

These dimples must be on the inner sheet metal directly across from the window motor screws (sorry I don't have my door panel off to take a picture for reference).

Well I took it out like you said, except for the window up part. I put the window down first and took out the motor. Hopefully that was okay. Anyhow it turns out that the internal drive is stripped, not the outer gear, so off to get a new motor. I guess that I should take the outer gear off just in case I need it or anyone else needs one.

Thanks again. Now to tackle the rear window. Does anyone know if the motor can be taken out with the window down?

Good pictures. To pull the motor, drop the tailgate and remove the interior panel. Remove the nuts as indicated in Pic #11. On the passenger side they are behind sheet metal as demonstrated in #12. Push the studs down and the window will slide up. While its up and the tailgate is down, be constantly aware that its there so you don't break it. Behind the center post is the wiring harness, disconnect it (pic #20). Read warnings on picture #15, when you remove the motor, the tension on the window arms will release. If you are just removing the motor, push the arms fully up to release the tension and keep fingers clear of it until the motor is removed. There are 3 bolts holding the motor in, and all 3 are on the interior side so you can actually reach them. Pull them and the motor will come out (remember to watch for the tension in the regulator arms). The wiring runs behind the regulator so if you have to work that loose if you are replacing the motor. If all you need is new gearing (motor runs but won't lift the window) and you can get a repair kit, pic 31 - 33). Then just set the motor back in, making sure the arms are aligned (which they should be unless they are binding with the unbolted window) and bolt down. I would test it here with the dash switch, move it all the way down then half-way up again. Bolt on the window and test the full range of movement. Move the window down again and replace panel, etc.

That's how I did it anyway...

BTW BroncoJoe, thanx for this. My problem is probably just an alignment issue since it works only when you push in on the tailgate while operating the switch (which is really easy to do when your used vehicle didn't come with the rear key and you have to simultaneously push the dash button and press in on the tailgate  ). Its a good thing this my 3rd-string vehicle, all vinyl interior for hunting season.

Well we (my wife. Small fingers and arms) got the passenger motor done, and the rear. Got them both at Napa for about $56.00 a piece. I had to jump the safety switch to get any power to the motor. I also found out that the dash switch is not working, but at least the rear key works. The window works pretty good, except it still is a little slow for the last few inches, but that may get better with more use.

Also found a little rust, and I'll post some pictures later as to what I should do. It's not through yet and it's only visible with the gate down. Thanks for the help though. Top come off tomorrow I hope.

Hey HardMaple,

Just as an aside... I understand that a lot of people bypass the switch that is in the left side tailgate locking mechanism.
