as some might remember what this bronco's been through, well it's getting even more done to it. my battery feeder from the alternator has been burning off with out warning. i've looked for a possible short or grounded circuit but the only thing was bad slices to the regulator. but long story short the entire truck is getting a new wiring harness. i've had electrical problems since i got it. some is was able to fix and others just cut and tape the wire off just to keep running. i got a painless kit from lmctruck.com it was a bit pricey, but i think it was well worth it. oh and a 200 amp alternator. i'll be uploading pics of the progress hopfully i won't run in to any problems like the engine swap. plus the carb is going. i've done 6 carb swaps in 3 years. they all fail in diffeent ways i can't keep them running so its to direct port fuel injection. the edlebrock pro flo2 system. a professional will be doin that.

YO Justin!

Those Painless harnesses are pretty good; acording to my pals here JSM and a few local pals.

As for the alt conn...you were lucky!

Connector; "fires allegedly caused by the Ford Alternator. Ford uses a plug connector and not the conventional attachment. Investigators think that this plug connector develops high resistance over time and becomes even more dangerous when it is removed and reconnected..."

Source: by interFIRE interfire.org

&

IAR Connector Burn Up; "...Due to a design flaw from the factory these units are prone to burn up. When replacing these units it is very easy to spread the wiring harness connectors. When this occurs, an electrical arcing takes place and will burn out the unit and harness. Due to excessive heat buildup at the output terminals the original plug is usually brittle and cracked, this is not something distinguishable by the ***** eye. Chances are it is damaged and not useable. You will notice that OCA IAR units come with a brand new wire plug and installed with dielectric grease..."

take some pics of your harness install if you can & post it here... you will be da 1stest to do it with pics and any tech info you can advise others on...

GL!

That is the cruise control, the second picture. The first picture is not a ford part.

well i've just about finished the exterior electrical. all that remains is grounding a few items adding the netrual safety and backup lights, getting the rad fan complete, and wiring.....the ac/heating curcuit. the interior.....well i'm tip toeing in that one. the ignition switch, gauage cluster, and turn signal will be the difficult ones, only because of the wires supplied don't really match whats in the bronco. but i do have some newer pics of the "so far" much better than the old.

which i might add to anyone having issues with power, shorts or electrical concerns for your bronco, i'd suggest to check these items: headlight switch (melted case), back of fuse box (burnt wires and melting action), some strange little box in the glove box (mine was all burnt to......), that 'little' wire that feeds all power from the alt, and the ignition switch. the switch would always have to be pulled back after starting to run the acc's. and then it got to the point of hitting the steering wheel to even start it. come to find out that was also becoming nice and chrispy.

pretty sure you wont come across the problems as with my engine swap. I was eliminating the wire harness rather than replacing

first would be patience. so far i've worked on it for two weekends so close to 30 hours. for a '90 a lot more wires than in mine but also going to carb will be less than what you have currently. the biggest issue to look out for are these systems: ignition switch, climate control, steering wheel, gauge's and cruise. with my 18 circuit there were a few less wires feeding the dash and wheel than with the original harness. they label the wires every 3-6 inches showing where they are coming from and going to. locate all wires feeding the engine compartment, under carriage, and rear first and run those through before you mount the fuse box, that's if yours is on the fire wall. get yourself plenty of those conduits, i had 3/8, 3/4, and i think 5/8 to run everything that and electrical tape. you will also need extra wire to run your grounds. i've been using the excess wire cut from the new harness for that. there's quite a lot of that. have a good working knowledge of the systems i mentioned as far as where the wires are going both directions. mark them make a drawing. they give basic wire diagrams of the more common set ups for fords. not all correct but it's a good reference. keep all the original connects and such you will be reusing them! oh and the rear window is NOT part of the harness. you will need to run that on your own. i have yet to start mine. i'm hoping to get it running if not at least test the electrical side of most systems this weekend. upgrade all you can with the wire side being apart. you never know when you might have to get back into there. and look closely at your switches, relays, contacts anywhere there was a splice connection what have you. you maybe surprised at what you find.....

good luck and i hope to have a little more to add this weekend.

well today was the day. hooked the battery up to test it. it all works, with a few systems not fully working but no fires no burn outs. planning on firing up tomorrow and finishing all the rest in the drive so it can go get the efi installed. will post the finished product this week.

well it runs it's on the street. but a few issues. the alt is not supplying voltage, the dis has power in the run position not in start. but did find some vac leaks and it does seem to run a little smoother...? not sure as to why other than faulty wiring to dis and choke. if anyone knows the poper connections for the ignition starter switch that would be great. plus one headlight is now dim and the front park lights go almost completly out with headlights on. few set backs but she works!
