I have an 84 with a 351w 2bbl auto that I just picked up. when I got it home I found the shift down linkage disconnected. now when I drive it it does not shift from first to second until about 35mph. any ideas on how to fix this?

Check the vaccum lines to the tranny, when you say " now when I drive it it does not shift from first to second until about 35mph" does that mean you re-installed the shiftdown linkage?

Yes I reconected the shift down linkage. where would I start looking for these vacuum lines? do the go to the side or top of the trany?

There should be a vaccum tree on the firewall I'd say probably right dead center of the engine.Theres usually about 4 or 5 lines coming out of this thing and one goes to the shift modulator on the transmission. I'm rolling through the rolidex in my head trying to remember the info for you, I am pretty sure the modulator is on the driverside by your shift linkage on the transmission. If this is not hooked up or has any holes in it, your tranny will do what you say you are experiencing now.

I just re-read your post, are you saying it used to shift fine but now that the linkage is hooked up it shifts funny? If so you may have knocked the vaccum line off this tree I was talking about.

When I first drove it , it never shifted down to the passing gear. it just slowly went thru the gears I looked under neath and found the c clip off the shift down linkage. I figured easy fix so I bought it took her home and put on a c clip to the linkage and know it wants to stay in first gear until about 35mph. then shift to second. I printed out a vacuum dia from the autozone website and looking at it now

Maybe the linkage is too tight and the trans thinks your throttle is wide open all the time.

35 would still be way too high even for wide open throttle, my guess would be vacuum lines as well
