Found out my 73 Bronco with a VIN that did not make sense is actually from a 73 Ford F100. It's been registered in two other states with the truck VIN. I found the Bronco VIN on the frame rail, and found that it is a 74. I have not yet registerd the Bronco in Tennessee where I am currently living. Do I tell the TN DMV? Or just play stupid if asked about the difference.

Thanks>>>

This is my fourth Bronco '66, 68, 74, and now 74

Since a lot of Ford parts are interchangable, I'd suggest that the part with a F100 vin number is actually from a F100 and that someone needed to change the part in the Bronco.

I would probably register the Bronco under the Bronco vin number. Right off hand the name of the service escapes me, but I believe you can find it on ebay. For a small fee you can research as many vin numbers as you like for about a month, I believe. That might give you some clues and alert you to any potential problems, like parts from a stolen truck. Armed with that information, you might also call the DMV without giving away who you are and ask their advice, telling them the part with the F100 VIN number is apparently a replacement part from a donor truck put in by someone when repairing the truck. If that doesn't go too well, you could just register it as a F100 like the last two folks did. Of course you might have some problems later on if a police officer picks up on the fact you are driving a Bronco registered as a F100. Before I made any decision I think I would do the vin number search first.

Any way that is what I would do.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks, I'm going to call the DMV and see what they have to say and go from there.

Anyone else have this happen to them I would like to hear what you did!

Thanks, Tim

Hey Blackdog,

First of all, congratulations on your new purchase. Second, I agree with Seabronc. Research the vin and see what it comes back to. A good website for that is www.carfax.com. I think it only costs $15 or $20. I've used them a few times fro my past purchases. So, good luck and post some pictures when you can.

Unfortunately I have no good news for you... Last year I bought an 83 Blazer from a friend who had it for 2 years unregistered because he couldnt afford to put the work into it. I dumped almost 4k into it by putting in a new motor, rebuilding the tranny new driveshafts, etc... After 3 months of work it finally passed emitions and was ready for registration. Then the unthinkable! As I am at the DMV for the inspection 3 police cars surrounded my truck and started questioning me, 20 min later my truck was on a flat bed. After talking to the detective he told me that the truck was stolen from California in 93. Oddly it was registered there 4 years ago. It has been in impound for over a year and I am s.o.l. the only light at the end of the tunnel is that the original ins. company paid out the claim and after CA does the research on it I might be able to buy it back from the ins. comapny. The longer I wait the more bleak it is becoming.

My suggestion is to contact the DMV and your local police dept. and research all vin numbers and make sure they are not from stolen vehicles.

Best of luck to ya and I hope you dont have to go through what I am.

Welcome to the Zone. Hopefully you can figure out what is going on there with the VIN. As long as you're doing the calling to find out things you should be in good shape. If you play stupid...it could get you into trouble.

Good luck.

Colleen
