First off let me appologize. I'm sure this info can be found if I do some searching aroundm but I'm in Afganistan rigt now and get limited internet time. So I'm hopping yall could give some quick answers for me. I'd appreciate it.

Last year I was in Iraq and on r&r I lifted my 84 F150, gave it some exhaust, a winch, bumper, power windows and some other junk. This year (like I said) I'm in Afghanistan and will be going on r&r soon. I'd like to order some parts to be waiting for me so I can wrench when I get home. My axles are totaly stock wich, correct me if I'm wrong, are a 9" rear and TTB in front. One of the parts I want to get are 3rd members for the axles. The 9" is no problem to find, but for the TTB it's the same as a Dana 44 right? If so the ones I've found (again, limited internet time) were for pass. side pumpkins and my TTB is drivers side. It also mentioned something about snap ring or bolt on........since I cant crawl under my truck at the moment does anybody know what it would be?

One other thing I'm looking at is a SAS instead of just replacing the front 3rd member. I already have a 6" lift on my truck and dont want or need to spend money replacing parts I just replaced. I was looking at the kits on the Bronco Graveyard site and sounds like it's a lift kit without the springs. Can I just get an axle from them and put it in or would I need to install mounts for the coils on it. Just not sure if theyre already set up for a coil sprung truck.

Again I appoligize for not searching, but after emailing the family I dont get much time to surf around. I'd sure appreciate yall's help.

Ford changed the rear axle from the 9" to the 8.8" in 1983, but continued to use the 9" up thru 86. So your 84 may have either one of those two. You can check on the axle code on the driver's door jamb sticker, or look at the axle itself. (Have someone do that for you). The 9" center chunk or gears come out the front, and the rear cover plate is welded on. The Ford 8.8" gears come out the back by removing the bolts in the cover plate. the front axle is a Dana 44 TTB, same gear set-up as the Ford Dana 44 straight axle, which also has the gears or pumpkin on the driver's side like the TTB (tiwn traction beam). Some year models use a C-clip to hold the passenger-side inner axle shaft in place inside the pumpkin, others do not. You won't know for sure which you have until you tear it down, but the 84 should have a clip like mine did. IF you're just ordering gears, you just need the ring & pinion and a new carrier for 3.93 and higher. It's a good time to add a locker, limited slip or spool. I put a spool in mine up front, and a mini-spool in the 9" rear axle. Did all of that, then sold the axles and lift kit when I did the SAS with 1-ton axles from a 88 F-350. If you use a Dana44 or Dana60, you will need to change springs, shocks, etc.. When you find a donor axle, try to get all of the front suspension piece with it. JSM84

Thanks. My dad cruised by the house and checked and yup, it's a 9". Now my questions are:

1. should it be a 28 or 31 spline and can it be checked with out ripping into the axle?

2. why do all the front (dana 44) 3rd members on Broncogravyard say theyre for a pass side axle if the TTB's and Dana 44's on Ford trucks and Broncos were on the drivers side?

3. anybody know of a reputable place where I can order both 3rd members in one stop? I was hoping to use broncograveyard but apparently their d44 3rd members are not for my front axle.

Thanks again for the help. I appologize for not being able to seach the stuff on my own.

I think its because they are attached to the axle beam that connects to the passenger side wheel. (even though the diff is actually on the driver's side of the truck)

Stay safe and CY6!
