Hi mountainman., welcome...!!

BOY..! I could have fun with this..! >:D< <'>

Actually, I think that's what they call an "OXY-*****" ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

My answer would be '66 thru '96 but, leave out the money/frustration part.... /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

One needs to enjoy spending $$$ & love frustration... otherwise you'll go to bed ea. night not worrying about anything. :-B

I too, have thought it would be fun to get my hands on a '78 with the small-block 400 eng. Lots-o-power., little smog/electronics stuff.

Best advice would be a rig with few or no mods., little or no rust., then set it up your way.

Ditto Bully Bob. In my opinion, unless you are well versed in reprogramming an EEC , the easiest engines to make modifications to are the carbed engines without electronic controls. That would be 66 to about 84, 85-87 351W. But I don't see how you are going to get away without spending a bit on the project. "Supe up" implies, cams, intakes, carburetors, heads, ignition systems, boring, polishing, headers, beefed up drive train, etc. That ain't cheap. Also, then you really need to know a bit about tuning that stuff.

Broncos can be beefed up a lot, but they were never intended to be drag racers or economy vehicles, especially the FSBs. If that is the kind of vehicle you want to end up with, I'd suggest finding a muscle car that needs some tender loving care and spend your money there. You will get a lot more BANG for the BUCK ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> .

Good luck,

In this case.., let us know what your "budget" is.. $-)

Working/playing with these rigs is a never-ending hobby..

Is your family able to fund you.., do you have an income/job..?

By the time you get a rig., insurance., get it runn'n properly & safely-(tires, brakes, etc.), you could have 5-10K in it already.

Then., sky's the limit on mods.

Don't mean to be "blunt" .., you've picked a great project but, this will take some serious planning, dedication & funding. >:D< <'>

Your intent, at your age, is quite admirable. :D/

Keep us posted & ask many questions.

the best one to supe up for the least amount of money is the one you can find cheap that is mechanically sound, cause like bob said you can sink alot of money into a project just to make it safe to use without getting into mods.

I had an 81 I got for 500 bucks then with only 200 into brakes and floor repair I was ready to build it into my snow beast.

2ND BIGGEST part of planning your project after budget is WHAT ARE YOU USING IT FOR?

that will directly effect Part 1 which is budget.

Big tires big lift mud and snow toy?

or high HP sand cruiser?

Flashy highway runner?

Also you'd be surprised what stock dirvetrain and suspension can get through on these old rigs.
