I have an 86 ford bronco that i am working on to tell the truth this is my first 4x4 so i really dont know much about how the suspension and the drivetrain should be set up its going to be a daily driver. I have a set of 15x10 steel wheels that i am wanting to put on with a set of 33x12.5s but i understand that this will put a burden on the transmission as well as the front suspension. It has the quad shock setup in the front already but as far as the bushings and handling i want to know the best route. So im not swapping trannys, bushings and bearings everytime i turn around, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. My Driveway is a mile long Trail that gets worse when it rains and snows hence the need for 4x4

Thanks Ted

You should be good with 33's.. just kmnow on some trucks, 33's rub, and on others they don't. I'm personally going with the 33" duratrac tires on my bronco by the end of the year.

Bushings are easy to replace..just time consuming.

As far as shocks go.. I got the Monroe Reflex shocks for mine. If you go this ruote, I learned (I have quad shock front end) "front forward" = behind the front axle..lol The reflex are top of the line, and cost me a tad over $300 for all 6 shocks. Huge improvment..I camp a lot and they performed amazing on the back roads and offroad trails!

Just be easy on the gas. Your tranny will last longer this way than beating on the gas an brakes all the time.

yo TED!

Welcome!

As a buddy. Mike wrote elsewhere for his Bronco; "the tread on a 12.50 is almost 10" wide so they fit very well on a 10" wide wheel. With that you can run them at a higher PSI and have less rolling resistance, better gas milage and better handeling. When they are mounted on an 8" wheel the tread will have a slight bulge to it, and unless you run them at a lower pressure the tread will not wear evenly across the tire. You can lower the pressure but rolling resistance will go up."

..

By SeattleBronco; "I like the wide track cosmetically and they perform well on rocks, sand and gravel. My experience is that dig in deep in snow and 8" wheels with a smaller tire track may perform better by riding on top."

..

by Mike X "just upgraded to 15x10 and i had to take my bumper off to trim it"

Yeah the tread on a 12.50 is almost exactally 10" wide so they fit very well on a 10" wide wheel. With that you can run them at a higher PSI and have less rolling resistance, better gas milage and better handeling. When they are mounted on an 8" wheel the tread will have a slight bulge to it, and unless you run them at a lower pressure the tread will not wear evenly across the tire. You can lower the pressure but rolling resistance will go up.

And this is how they wear. Notice how much more tread there is on the outer edges compared to the inside.

This is what I wanted to know. I want them to wear evenly and handle good.

I don't want 8in rims to make them wear like I have them over-inflated."

And, depending on your Spring sag... you may need to use a cut-off wheel to trim the bumper or use washers to space it out further. On my 96, I had to space it out for 32 11.50's and trim that plastic valence a bit.

We have some Sticky Tire Info Stickies here @ http://broncozone.com/topic/7590-tire-sizes/

Yep, 31x10.50's without any rub or fender contact. Try a search, there's plenty of info on tire size and fitment. I have 33x12.50R15's on 15x10" rims on my stock 86 Bronco with no rub, but each bronoc is unique, as are year models. Best suggestion is to try a 31/32/33" tire-rim combo on YOUR Bronco, and check the clearance. Do not forget the fact that a larger-than-stock tire will affect your final drive ratio, which affects mileage and the speedometer. You will want to know your axle gear ratio, as well as the engine/tranny/t-case model to figure the change from larger/taller tires. There are formulas to figure ear ratio for a tire size as well. by JSM84

now, this is by no means the be-all, end-all bible for bronco tire fitment. there are all sorts of variables that come into play. This post is being created in order to cut down on the repetitive questions of what size tires can i fit with X amount of lift.

31" tires: these generally come on the truck stock. no fitment issues, no rubbing

33" tires: these WILL fit with no lift. the fit will be a touch snug, but you can either trim the edges of the bumper, or use washers as shims at the bumper mount. you can run a 3" body lift if you like to clear these tires, but its not necesary. slight rub will be encountered on the radius arms, depending on the dimensions of the rims

35" tires: these will fit with a 3" body lift at bare minimum, but its not advised for wheeling. large amounts of contact will be seen between body and tires. 4" suspension lift will provide better clearance, with a 6" suspension lift providing the optimal clearance while mainting a good center of gravity

38" tires: these can be run with 6" of lift and healthy amounts of fender trimming. its better to run around 8" of lift in order sufficiently clear these tires. once you get up into this size tire, you will be seriously taxing your stock running gear and drivetrain. a built up solid Dana 44 and rear 9" can handle this setup OK. adding a stonger rear, such as a Dana 60, is a safer option. depending on your typical wheeling enviroment, a swap to one ton running gear may be necesary to minimize breakage.

anything bigger than 38" is going to be totally custom, and you really should upgrade to one ton stuff

Suggest you buy an OFFICIAL Ford Bronco Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM), Powertrain Controls and Emission Diagnosis Manual (PCED), Service Manual - Google for it - make sure it's by Ford and not by Chilton or some other source. Seabronc has a thread on this; hopefully he'll see this post and give you the keyword search he uses.

Here is the typical detailed info you'll get:

Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM) Partial, Bronco for 86; Speed Control, A/C, Heater, Radio

Source: by Ford via Chris B (Blue, bronco boy) at http://chrisb.users.superford.org/Bronco/Misc/

-----------

Wiring Diagrams (Partial, Bronco similar) for F 150 in 86, 89, 91 & 95; EEC, Start/Ignition, EFI/Fuel System, Emissions, E4OD, AOD/C6 (+ clutch interlock switch), etc. from Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM)

You can use the Search Feature to the top, Right to find Links;
