I have to replace the coolant bypass hose on my '90 Bronco, 5.8L, Eddie Bauer. I got a molded, "exact" replacement unit from O'Reilly's Auto Parts, but it sure looks like a tricky thing to replace when the water pump is still in place. Also, seems like I've read somewhere of a few folks who found it a nightmare to replace the bypass hose.

So, before I tear into the chore, I thought I'd ask if anyone else has done this, and might have some tips to pass along? One thing I'm not sure of is if the coolant should be drained or lowered before removing the old bypass hose? My Haynes manual is no help.

I already know to lubricate the fittings before trying to slide the new one on, and to use glycerin rather than a petroleum-based product. Beyond that, I'm in the dark.

yo S!

WP can stay in-place; drain some coolant... heater and Throttle Body, etc. hoses are above that bypass, so figure on wht is needed to be drained. I' ****, I starin coolant, gasoline thru coffee filters before pouring it back in.

This hose part # may be made for both the 5.0 & 5.8 so it , so if it's too long & Kinks @ bend cut enuf off to fit

my advice is to remove the clamps, drain a little coolant, and then cut the old hose out, there is no need fighting the old hose, and lubricate the new hose slightly, if you put too much on it could possibly blow off, when i work at home i pull the oil dipstick and use the oil on the end to lubricate, i like using oil because the hoses soak up oil slightly and they will come off easy if you ever need to take them off

Cut old hose off kink the new one in the middle **** both ends and slide them both on at the same time. unscrew the clamps and open them up to wrap them around the installed hose ( easier to put hose on with out clamps and then put clamps on)

Thanks to all the good advice given here, the bypass hose replacement went smoothly. It was leaking to begin with, and when I tried to remove it, the hose was so rotten, it tore in half. I guess I got to the job just in time. Thanks again to all .
