1992 ford bronco 302

automatic

265000 miles original motor

problem:

starts and drives but smokes bad , smoke smells like gas im pretty sure, shakes and makes noises, has oil or some kind of black residue coming from the driver side exhaust manifold. loss of power.

what i did:

checked timing and adjustd it, didnt change.

pulled all spark plugs and wires and replaced, didnt change

ran obd1 scanner

got codes such as cannot control cylinder balance

egr bad flow

oil and antifreeze not mixing at all or low

any ideas on where to start again im stumped?

its not really knocking like it threw a rod either

if you have all them symptoms and that many miles i would say its time for a rebuild.

Yeah, i didnt either, but with two cracked pistons, blue smoke, and losing oil pressure, I had no choice

i would check compression at least on bank 2. should be 120psi+ on all cyl. also try hitting egr valve with hammer it could be stuck but like bronc76 said you probably need an overhaul.

The smoke that smells like gas is probably from running too rich. Does the choke open up as it warms up? How old is the carb? You may need to rebuild it, but a new one will work out better.

The same for the residue on the driver side manifold. If it is not oil then you probably need a new manifold gasket. If it is oil then the valve cover probably needs a new gasket.

Good luck,

:)>-

check your compression, egr valve, fuel injectors, cat converter, TPS. my guess is your rings might be bad which would explain the oil....it may be time for a rebuild, but you might get lucky
