I think i am dealing with a transmission issue, but not sure. As I am driving, the engine will race to high RPM's before shifting between first and second, and the same between second and third. Once in third, it is almost impoosible to get her past 55 unless going downhill. Pretty bad when grandma in a chevy sprint passes me on the highway. Now I can't tell you what RPM's i go to cause I have no Tach, but in estimate would be 4500RPM's. It's a 84 Bronco 302 with preformer intake and Holly 450 4BBL C-6.

Where should I start?

[i moved the post to this forum so you can get more response, JSM84]

it could be a major slippage problem in the tranny, due to worn clutches. Check the tranny fluid on the dipstick. Is it brown or does it have a burnt odor to it? You can also check the vacuum modulator to be sure there's no hose leaking. ANd if you go to a shop to get an estimate, go to at least three. Two will want to rebuild the tranny without looking, but one will tell you what needs to be repaired.

Hahahah......yeah i know how that works. went through that when I had a 68 Cutlass 442 I restored. Had a TH400 that was slipping. Solved it by buying a used TH400 at a junk yard. Well I lucked out and found an 83 Bronco 302 with a C6 and a 9". My 302 is blown, cracked block and all so for a whopping 250 buck I can buy the 83 for parts and do a swap. Only problem is my county just started emissions and not only do I not have a cat, but that Y pipe is rotted beyond repair and it is discontinued. I am thinking of just going with a set of headers and a duel exaust kit from Dynomax. Only 2.25 pipes, but hey I ain't gonna bitch.

Those emissions regs are a bear, but I guess they help the air quality. Seriously, it should be fairly easy to have a y-pipe made or find a decent one in a salvage yard for a pattern. The 83-85 Broncos originally had 2 cats, but you may get by with only one. A true dual set-up is tough due to the t-case location. And it's worth the $250 for that parts Bronco if it has the Ford 9" rearend. Consider parting out the stuff you don't need. As you know, it's hard to find some items for those year models.

That'd be about as bad as the inspection sticker I drew on my car about 5 years ago.........I am still paying the fine.
