The reason why I say it was not a fuel problem is because you stated yourself that the RPM's stayed the same and the speedo

dropped 10 mph. If you had a fuel problem it would drop the RPM at the same time.

I may be wrong but I think when you pull the diff cover you will probally

see that the clutches or spiders are letting go. Check the ears on the clutches to see if they are still there. Sounds like they are either broken or spooling up and causing the rear end to bog down.

Good luck

The more I read this thread, I believe Pony-boy is on to something!!! I had a Ford8.8" rear axle go out on me, with no prior warning. IT started growling really bad all of a sudden, and 2 miles later needed a tow truck. I would certainly pull the rear cover off and inspect the gears and the fluid for metal particles, as those pics look just like mine did. All of the fluid burned up due to the excess heat!

Do yourself a favor. Seriously

If it is to cold or rainy in your area to pull the cover,

This will take 5 minutes at most.

Get under your rig and pull the filler plug from the rear end.

It is located at the front of the diff and the drivers side of the pinion.

It has a magnet on the end of it. If you do that, there should be

little to no metal particles on it and the gear oil should

smell rancid :-& but not like burnt toast.

If you wannt take it a step farther.

Get a white paper towel or piece of clear white paper would be better.

Stick your finger in the hole and drip the gear oil on the paper.

It should look like the color of motor oil or maple syrup.

If it is grey, metallic or very dark. You have a problem and need to quit

driving it until it is fixed, because it will most likely leave you stranded.

When it warms up or first chance you get, pull the rear cover and take a look inside the diff. at the gears and bearings.

Your carrier bearings are probally going out. Or your

pinion bearing.

You are lucky that you don't have the L/S diff though.

The open carrier is much stronger and is probally what it is still

together.

Try to find someone, friend of a friend, that can do gears.

The gears themselves are pretty cheap. $120 to $150 for a R&P

and about $100 for a shim and bearing rebuild kit. When you can

pull the cover you will know if you need new gears or not. You

could get away with not having to replace them if it is only the bearings.

Shoot maybe someone on here that is close could help.

Start pricing both the gears and the master install kits so you know

what you need to spend on that.

Genuine gear from 4WP are the low budget way to go and they sometimes come with the kit.

If you are not really ******* them they are a good replacement R&P to

go with.

Don't listen to the flaming about to happen with 4WP. Lots of

people don't like them. But you need a SMALL Budget rearend and

they are the place to go.

I am sorry that you now need to spend more money but I am glad you

found out what is in store before it really broke.
