Hey folks,

So it's been a while since i've posted. I posted a bit early last year with pictures of the older woman in my life and about a stereo install. Well, I got that done, all i'm missing is an amp to power the sub and she's officially into the 21st century with some style. She sounds SOO good.

My problem now, is she sounds good inside, and the engine sounds as **** as always. However, she's looking a little but run down. Her old paint is starting to chip, and peel and making room for some rust which is definitely bad. I don't wanna see her get a serious case of body rot, so i want to get the minor stuff treated and get her repainted.

I'm figuring around 5 to 7 grand to get her done BUT i'm wondering how many people here have gone to a professional body shop to get their babies patched and painted. She's probably never gonna be a trail rig for me, so a nice street paint job is what i'm looking for. Probably with the clear coat and whole deal. Alot of my friends are tellin me it ain't worth it, but she's got a solid frame, never been in an accident and has very little rust.

So to anyone who's had their rig repainted or put in the shop for minor repairs. Any guestimates are appreciated.

Cheers,

Ben

P.S.: She's a 1980 Bronco XLT and also already has 3 coats of paint on her that are all starting to chip. It looks like she was painted maroon, then white, then maroon again. I also already asked one restoration place who quoted me 10K for a full repaint with no bodywork and stripping the current paint would cost extra. Given the chips and peeling though, i don't have a choice BUT to strip her down.

I agree that just a good quality paint job alone is going to run you about $3000, plus any body work or rust repair that needs to be done. I had the 84 re-painted about 5 years ago and went thru this same scouting process. I checked with several body shops and got mostly the same answer. Basically, unless you know someone personally or have a relative, most of their work comes from insurance claims. You can get a cheapie Maaco or Earl Shribe $199 job, but that's the same paint used on trailer houses and barrels and other junk. IT's not quality paint and will not last more than a year before you have a problem.

I lucked out and found an old friend that used to run his own shop, then retired and does custom paint jobs in his home garage for local show cars. His work has won many awards at local and state-wide shows, so I knew he wa going to do it right. Total cost was $1350, including about $900 just for paint, some dent repair and a new windshield. You can rear more about the paint job in my featured truck article here at Bronco Zone, and check out the pics in my supermotors.net gallery. JSM84
