I was thinking of trying out these Lockers from my4by. Check out the link below and maybe some of you with rear end experience can tell me if this is bunk or something worth trying instead of buying a new posi rearend. there is nothing wrong with the one i have now, i just was thinking of making the front and rear lockers for the posi effect

I have this locker in the 9 inch and an ARB in the front. I dont have a lot of time offroad with it yet but on the street WOW! It does bark around corners and seems to work great. Curious to see some other responses.

how difficult was it to install? I am pretty mechanical and have done some engine rebuilds but never tackled the transmission or rear ends. I have plenty of tools but no press if I need one. Since I am removing the axls and popping the pumkin, I probably should replace the axle wheel bearings since its a 1970 and never been out. What else should I have replaced while in the rear end ?

You said you put an ARB in front.....what is that? I have a Dana 30 and was thinking of putting the locker in there also. I dont do extreem 4WD just a lot of hunting in steep terrain so i dont think i need the dana 40 up front and besides it is to expensive.

ARB is an air locker that's for serious 4x4'n

A true "locker" in a front dana 30 is a no-no....W/O serious mods.

You could use a good posi unit though.

There's not much there on the rear axles. the bearing & keeper are pressed on, (the bearing is sealed) & the retainer plate.

But., if you go to some type of rear locker...you'll likely need new axles to match up the splines.

Its pretty easy physically to rebuild a differential (especially a 9"). But its also an art to set one up that doesnt howl. Anybody can read a book and setup a 9" but it takes a trained eye to read the gear pattern in the paint. The Dana 30 is fairly weak and its almost not worth tricking out a dana 30....but if you dont do extreme wheeling I would look into a trak-lok ( I think thats what the factory clutch posi for the front ends are called??), install that into the dana 30 and then look for a twin stick setup for your transfer case. This way you dont have to have power steering, you cant put too much bind on the 30 with manual steering and you can unlock the transfer case from the front end when you need to steer or lock in the transfer case to power the front end when you need the traction. This would be a great setup for you and its fairly inexpensive.

One thing that I don't think was mentioned here is that the Lock-Right can only be installed in a carrier housing of an open differential. If you already have some kind of limited slip or whatever, you will not be able to install it in that carrier. Not a big deal, but something to make note of.

I put a Lock-Right in a '65 Land Cruiser a few years back. I really like it. Going from an open rear end to a locker was a real impressive thing in that rig. It went from needing the front engaged for most uses to just running on the rear until it got really crossed up. You can hear it ratchet going slow around corners, but I don't care.

"...what is an open differential?"

It' what's in/on every rear wheel drive veh. that doesn't have a "TAD" (traction adding device)

Same for 4x4 front axles.

FYI..., 4x4's are actually 2 wheel dr. (1 front & 1 rear) with "open" diff's  /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

A "TAD" will give you 4 drive wheels....... ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

"And how do you tell.?"

Jack up the rear...spin a wheel..., if both rears go the same direction., there's a TAD in there.

LUNCH BOX LOCKERS are great for mud and fire roads but i would not trust them if you run a tire size over 33inch and or big horse power. I put a powertrax in the front of my dana 44 with 35" tires and it did not take long before the chattering stopped and the steering felt like i needed a hydro assistant. i tore the front end apart and found i had sheared the pins. this making it act like a spool. if $$$ is the issue i would order extra pinns just in case.
