My power streering is leaking, but i dont think its from the pump. I think its at the lower part. Have any of you dealt with it before? How easy is it to change my self?

hey man i just went through this on my 82. i just automatically assumed it was the pump because i couldnt really tell where it was coming from and i have a bad habbit of thinking worst case. so i changed the pump with a new heavy duty version and it still leaked. it ended up being the cooling line that kinda curls down the frame and back over to the gearbox. it had chaffed just a very small hole in two spots. it didnt even look like it was all the way threw but it was enough to leak. and that was a pretty simple fix. i got one at the junk yard for 5 dollars and had it installed in like 5 mins.

My 84' had a bad leak around the pump and I thought thats what it was, so I repalced it and found it still leaking like crazy. Ends up it was the bottom of the steering box, there is a set of seals there that had begun to leak. I had to change the steering box. Yes, I could have changed the seal, but the box was over 25 years old and had some slop in it so I went with a new one for $125.00

The only thing you may run into if that is the issue is the pitman arm. That and making sure you mark the shaft for reattaching.

my best advice would be to clean the whole system off. once its clean you can get a better idea of where its coming from. the highest point where you see fluid will be where your leak is more than likely
