now was this just a mod to a 1/2 ton axel so that you could get the 8 lug set up brakes and all ? what was purpose of the mod ? benefit ?

a sterling comes from a 3/4 ton truck so it has the 8 lug

in order to run the front diff you need to convert it to 8 lug as well on either the solid dana 44 or the ttb 44

Yes these are 3/4 or 1 ton outers on the 1/2 ton TTB front.

Well you get bigger brakes, beefy as **** outers (did you see the size of the lockout?) without the fabricating or expence of a solid axle. Even the F250 and F350 1 tons still have a TTB that is not that much different than the 1/2 ton units

And yes it has a 1 ton rear so it is nice to have all the lug patterns the same. Not like I usally carry a spare and deffinetly dont want to carry 2
