In the 10 or so years I've owned my 87 Full size Bronco I've replaced the Alternator several times due to the Internal Voltage regulator "burning out" and although several were no cost warenty replacements I'm sick and tired of it. So tired of it the last time "so i thought" I bought a High Output model from BGY thinking this would get away from the remanufactured stuff and I would get some degree of reliability back. alas while away from home on a business trip "typicly perfect timing" my wife informed me it wouldn't start. And as usual the battery is discharging thru the alternator when the truck is parked over night. Is there a kit or way to convert these to external regulators that mount on the firewall so at least i can replace the regulator mounted on the firewall more conviently.

Not that I know of. An 87 has a 2G alternator or have you converted to a 3G? The 2G has an external fan like the old external regulator type. A 3G has the fan inside the case. If you haven't converted to a 3G then I'd do that. I've had a 3g installed for about 6 years and have never had a glitch with it. I've heard of people having that problem but never as often as you seem to have it.

However, you could just buy a 100 amp alternator and regulator for an 83 Bronco and install it on your truck. The charge power distribution diagrams for the 83 attached. The stock 83 alternator is a 60 amp, but you any good parts guy will be able to match it with a 100 amp one.

Good luck,

:)>-

Well, the last time I replaced it I bought the 170 amp from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard. It's got an internal fan like the 3G you described. It wasn't cheap and has a lot more life in it cept for the stink'n diodes in the regulator. ARG!!! Internal or external they do the same thing. I'll keep lookin or start experimenting. Thanks for the diagrams

If you do go with the old style alternator, you don't need the part in the diagram that hooks to the 83 ammeter, never have seen a real working one  , and besides a volt meter is a better option to watch the output of an alternator any way. Also, to hook up an ammeter that is a special set of wires that make up a current shunt.

By the way, where have you been getting the regulators from? Big box parts chain? or a good local professional parts supplier?
