hi everyone im new. i have joined the site to hopefuly find the 89 bronco seat i have been looking for. i am more of a turbo buick guy, but use my 89 bronco as a DD. btw i do custom paint and bodywork. i have done so much rust repair on my bronco that i almost giving up but for some reason i keep fixing the rust. i have no clue why these cars rust out so much.

Welcome to the Zone > I know where you are at with the rust. It appears that Ford designed it to rust :mad: , The majority of the rust problems would have been easy to prevent like the designed in places to hold mud and moisture. Most of the other areas are a result of poor corrosion protection, poor moisture drainage and too much usage of the body as an electrical conductor causing galvanic rust at welds. I'm sure you have visited them all. I think :unsure: I've got most of those problems solved now but time will tell. I used a ton of new metal, rust converter and undercoat plus redesigned splash guards and closed up some of the mud collectors.

I just spent the last year and a half, as time permitted, doing my Bronco;

1. replaced driver side floor board

2. replaced both rocker panels

3. replaced both sides lower B post

4. replaced a small section of the right side A post

5. repaired a couple of small ares of the tub where it steps down to the passenger area

6. replaced the back 20 inches of the tub, cut the rear off a 96 ;

A. replaced the rear tub support

B. Tail gate support

C. Tub section

7. Quarter panels

8. Tail gate

I don't believe that you can do anything that will permanently stop rust, "rust never sleeps", (don't know who is the originator of that statement, but I believe him. Maybe there is one way. move to a desert :rolleyes: . All I can say is,

1. replace any rotted metal, in my case I had to cut off the rear 10 to 20 inches and graft in the rear of a newer truck after I completely disassembled the pieces and treated them.

2. I didn't use welds when replacing metal, most of the rust starts at a weld. I used structural epoxy designed for the purpose.

3. clean all surface rusted metal and treat it with a rust inhibitor, then paint it and undercoat it.

4. keep a constant lookout for signs of rust starting and treat it immediately.

Forgive the short tour of some of the body work, but it may give you an idea. I didn't take any pictures of the under body, but the entire thing was cleaned, rust areas treated, painted and undercoated. While I was at it, I also replaced the body mounts.
