check out this link... here are some uncommon repair manuals -- i am considering buying one... but which one?

the haynes manual i bought at autozone is not very clear in it's instructions. it covers too many years (80-96), 2 vehicles (bronco and f150), 4 engines (i6, v6, 302, 351), 2wd and 4wd, and at least 4 transmissions. it seems to me that it is written as a summary, instead of a "complete teardown and rebuild" -- as it says on the cover.

can you help me find a better manual?

thanks,

W.

:) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />, ok, I'll bite. You're joking right ? The *Chilton's* manual is better than the Helm *factory* manuals ? Chiltons ?!? The factory manuals that every dealership in the country uses to fix these trucks ? Owning both I can absolutely, positively, guarantee than the Chilton's is in no way, shape or form more specific than the factory manuals. I have a set for the 78/79 and also for the 87/88 and would dearly like to know of a single instance where the Chilton's is "more specific" than the factory.

Just by way of a quick example, look up the A/C, heater blower control in your Chilton's manual and compare it to what the factory manuals shows. I haven't scanned the pages in for the 80-96 but here's what the 78/79 manual shows:

Yes, they are pricey but you get what you pay for, simple as that. If you buy a $16 manual you get $16 information. If you look you can frequently find singles or sets considerably cheaper because they're missing a cover or something like that. The set I linked to was simply the first complete set I came across. I paid $20 for the one for my 88'. Go back to Ebay & you'll find 15 or 20 others all at various prices.

I agree. Between the two the Chilton's manuals are better than the Haynes. The Haynes manuals are maybe ok for simple straightforward mechanical issues like replacing a wheel bearing but diagnostically they really fall short. If you already know what the problem is they can be helpful but if you're trying to fix something quickly & have to pick-up whatever's available locally then I'd definitely go with a chilton's.
